The best of yesterday today: The Rado Captain Cook
Vintage style at its best – the Rado Captain Cook line builds a bridge from the past to the here and now. The classics of yesteryear have been reinterpreted and now sport a distinctly contemporary look. In terms of production and technology, they are absolutely up to date, giving the design language of the 1950s and 1960s a surprisingly modern feel.
Design with a finger on the pulse
In keeping with its name, the Rado Captain Cook line looks back to the early years of the Swiss brand. Founded in 1957, Rado made a name for itself early on with innovative materials, timeless design and high aesthetic standards. One of the first lines was the Rado Golden Horse, a simple stainless steel watch that caused a sensation as a fashion accessory at the time. The Rado Captain Cook made big waves at the beginning of the 1960s. This diving watch has a concave bezel for setting the dive time and a slightly domed dial and its distinctive sword and arrow-shaped hands and wedge-shaped indexes that ensure perfect readability. The Captain Cook has a charisma of its own.
Today, the manufacturer based in Legnau puts a lot of heart and soul into reworking its classics subtly and with a love of detail and dressing them in a contemporary style. While the design of the dial, which is focused on function, is almost 1:1 similar to the original, the components and equipment meet the latest standards of today. For example, the Captain Cook of today has a bezel made of high-tech ceramic – a durable material that has been used by Rado since 1986, and instead of the acrylic glass of the 60s, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal now protects the dial. Rado was also a pioneer in this area as in 1962, the sapphire crystal was first introduced in the legendary Rado Diastar. Today, the robust and well-proportioned stainless steel cases contain reliable automatic calibers from ETA and the small anchor logo, while being another a reference to the past, bears witness to this. With a wide range of tasteful dial colors and all kinds of strap variations, Rado Captain Cook has something for all kinds of watch enthusiasts who appreciate authentic design with a personal touch.
