Watch winders: How do they work?

A watch winder does exactly what its name suggests, it keeps your automatic watch running when you’re not wearing it. If you wear your watch every day, your movement keeps your automatic watch running and keeping the correct time, so you barely have to think about it. An automatic watch will keep running with daily use because the weight swings or rotates while the watch is worn and this turns the winding mechanism inside the watch. But, if you choose not to wear your watch for a few days, it will stop completely. To make sure that you don’t have to wind up and adjust your automatic watch every time you take a break from wearing it, you can use a watch winder. To use a watch winder, all you have to do is secure your watch in the winder, and it will rotate on its own rotor axis. This movement is then transferred to the winding mechanism of the watch, which means that all of the functions remain intact.

How to set the watch winder correctly

In order to protect your watch from wear and tear, you need to ensure that the watch winder completes the right number of revolutions every day. The rule of thumb is the fewer the better. Most automatic calibers can cope with 650-900 revolutions per day, but there are subtle differences depending on the type of watch. The direction of rotation can also vary.

Giving a watch winder as a gift

Watch winders are not only functional gifts, many are beautifully decorated and made of the finest hardwood making them stunning ‘jewelry box’ style gifts. The watch winders from Döttling or Buben & Zörweg are made of the highest quality materials and are intricately decorated. Watch winders come in elegant wooden boxes or no-frills stainless steel designs, which means that you’re sure to find the perfect gift for the watch lover in your life.
