L’Epée 1839: From music boxes to horological masterpieces

Founded in 1839 in Saint Suzanne, France, as a manufactory for music boxes and timepieces, L'Epée 1839 quickly made a name for itself in the world of watches. By 1850, the company held several patents, was famous for developing its own watch escapements, and was awarded gold at several world exhibitions over the next few years.

Becoming a go-to brand for exclusive wall and table clocks

During the years that followed and into the middle of the 20th century, L'Epée concentrated on developing its own mechanical movements and precision instruments even further. It was not until 1975 that the company began to focus entirely on the design and manufacture of luxury grandfather clocks.

By the way: L'Epée equipped Concorde with wall clocks in 1976 - to this day the only clocks to have been fitted to a supersonic civil aviation aircraft.

After launching a modern line of table clocks in 2009, L'Epée took a bold step in 2014 to combine art and the art of timekeeping under their ART Line. Horological sculptures reminiscent of animals, robots or time capsules delighted (and shocked) collectors around the world. At Wempe, you will find some of these table clocks by L'Epée - so get inspired or in one of our branches.
