Naturally Perfect Pearl Jewelry

Pearl necklaces are a timeless classic. Simple studs with a single pearl are another enduring fashion statement. At Wempe, you will find these classic pieces of pearl jewelry alongside creative reinterpretations all set with these jewels from the ocean.

How Pearls Are Made

Did you know that pearls are actually made by accident? A natural pearl begins life inside an oyster's shell and begins to form when an intruder, such as a grain of sand, slips in between the two shells. To protect itself, the oyster gradually coats the grain of sand with layers of nacre—also known as mother-of-pearl—which eventually creates a fully—formed pearl. This natural process is now artificially induced to produce cultured pearls too, such as the Tahiti or South Sea pearl, which we also use for some of our pearl jewelry. No two pearls are alike. Small variations in shape and color mean that each pearl is unique and these are also signs of authenticity.

Tip: If you want to check the authenticity of pearl jewelry you can do the so-called "tooth test". A real pearl will feel rough and sandy on your teeth—a plastic pearl, on the other hand, will slide off them.

Caring for Your Pearl Jewelry

Although pearls are created by forces of nature they require appropriate care to keep them shining. Perfume, powder and hairspray, just like acids and cosmetics containing alcohol, can dull their shine. When storing your pearl jewelry you should separate your pearl pieces from jewelry made with other materials. But, the most important care product for pearls is your own skin, because contact with it makes them shine the most. Pearl necklaces can wear over time, especially if you wear them a lot, so we will check them for you on a regular basis. If needed, we can also restring your necklace with natural silk and knot each pearl by hand. This jewelry service is free of charge for all Wempe pearl necklaces for the first five years.
