TAG Heuer Monaco: Steve McQueen's legendary chronograph
In 1969, TAG Heuer set new standards with the launch of the Monaco. This was the first water-resistant watch to be made with a square case and was also one of the first automatic chronographs ever made. The TAG Heuer Monaco also featured a bold design. In fact, in 1971, Steve McQueen wore the watch in the movie "Le Mans" and transformed the TAG Heuer Monaco into a true legend.
A watch with a multifaceted personality
The TAG Heuer Monaco, presented simultaneously in Geneva and New York on March 3, 1969, was the first square, water-resistant automatic chronograph in the history of Swiss watchmaking. It broke with the aesthetic principles of traditional watchmaking and featured a large square case with straight angles, a metallic blue dial, a domed plastic glass and, put the crown on the left side of the case, which indicated that the watch could be wound automatically. Also new at the time was the fact that this square watch offered absolute water resistance. However, the real revolution was inside the watch thanks to the famous Caliber 11 – one of the first automatic chronograph movements in watch history.
Today, TAG Heuer Monaco continues to maintain its distinctive style. The new editions emphasize the square shape of the stainless steel case. However, it now has a sapphire crystal in the back so you can see the legendary caliber in all its beauty.
