Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix - now available at Wempe

Stringent Aesthetics – its Design Vocabulary Combines the Past and the Present

Vacheron Constantin, established in 1755, is the oldest watch manufacturer in continuous activity in the world. Its high watchmaking expertise and perfect craftsmanship have always been undisputed among connoisseurs of the brand. The new Fiftysix collection offers now all followers of a cosmopolitan lifestyle the possibility to come to appreciate this luxury without having to make sacrifices. The Fiftysix models meet all requirements that are justly imposed on an haute horlogerie brand.

Fiftysix Self-Winding

All models of the Fiftysix collection are equipped with a self-winding movement. They are powered exclusively by the energy of its wearer and store the energy for at least a further 40 hours. The self-winding model of the Fiftysix collection with a contemporary diameter of 40 millimeters is fitted with an alligator skin strap—the same as the other variants—that, depending on the version, is closed with a stainless steel folding clasp in the shape of half a Maltese cross or with a pin clasp in gold.

Fiftysix Day-Date

The skilfull interplay between different circles on the dial of the Fiftysix goes into a further round with the day, date, and power-reserve displays. The characteristic display of the day of the week at 9 o’clock and of the date at 3 o’clock is further highlighted by the double opaline effect of the sunburst decoration. The power reserve is indicated at 6 o’clock in a masterly curved circle segment that perfectly blends into the well-balanced dial design.

Fiftysix Complete Calendar

The 40-millimeter Fiftysix model with a complete calendar is the collection’s flagship model. Entirely in the tradition of the 1950s, the day of the week and the month are shown in rectangular windows below the manufacture’s logo at 12 o’clock. The highly precise moon-phase display located at 6 o’clock creates a well-balanced harmony on the dial. It only needs to be corrected once in 122 years. A center hand indicates the current date on a circumferential number circle. The Fiftysix Complete Calendar thus plays skillfully with a typical dial characteristic of the 1950s.

"The Fiftysix gives time a stimulating design vocabulary. It has a historic appearance, but its youthful freshness is also an expression of modernity."

Nick Siemer, Product Manager Watches at Wempe

The Fiftysix family from Vacheron Constantin is an extension of the collections of the traditional Geneva manufacture. There are five important reasons explaining the core values of the timepieces.

1. THE DESIGN: The Maltese cross is a striking feature of watches from the 1950s. The design of the Fiftysix models is committed to this shape that also inspired the case lugs. Furthermore, the crown, which comes with a flank protection in the new model, proudly bears this historic symbol, which was already used in ancient times.

2. THE MOVEMENT: All Fiftysix models are equipped with a self-winding caliber. Should the wearer take off the watch, it will show the exact time for at least 40 hours without any further energy supply. The skeleton rotor was specially designed for the Fiftysix collection. It is crafted in 22 karat polished and satin-finished gold and distinguishes itself by a Maltese cross applique and a mat sunburst decoration.

3. THE REFINEMENT: Fine watchmaking can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback. Geneva stripes, circular graining, and sun-brushed finish stand for the usual high finishing standards.

4. THE RELIABILITY: The Fiftysix follows its predecessors down to the design details. However, it implements them with modern means. As for example the distinctive shape of the beveled glass above the dial. Originally made of Plexiglas, it is nowadays made of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, which is by far more difficult to produce. And back then, as today, this model is water-resistant up to 3 bar despite its multi-part case.

5. THE RESTRAINT: Gold numerals and hour markers alternate in the stainless steel versions as well as the gold variant of the Fiftysix. They are a mark of respect towards the manufacture’s history and at the same time a restrained evidence of the high demands of its wearer. A discreet yet dramatic gray sunburst pattern on the dial adorns the stainless steel version, a silver one the version in 5N rose gold.

The Fiftysix Models Translate a Modern Design Vocabulary into the Present

The Fiftysix models are inspired by a historic watch that Vacheron Constantin first presented in 1956. This reference 6073 with a classic dial with Arabic numerals serves as model for the current reinterpretation. It already offered state-of-the-art technology in an attractive design at those times. It was one of the first watches that the manufacture equipped with a self-winding movement. Contrary to the prevailing hand-wound watches, they offered a stable accuracy thanks to this great technical achievement.

The Maltese Cross Symbolizes the High Standard of the Brand

The eight-pointed Maltese cross was already registered as trademark in four variants at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in Bern in 1880. It is reminiscent of a similarly shaped, historic component that limited the extent to which the barrel of a watch could be wound. The design vocabulary of the current Fiftysix watches reflects the Maltese cross and the case lugs are also inspired by this emblem.
