Like many models from this Swiss watch brand, the TAG Heuer Autavia is associated with the motor sports of the 1960s and 1970s. When it was unveiled in 1962, it was the first commercial chronograph to be made by the brand, which they simply called the "Heuer".

The name of this line, today, tells you what these watches are all about as Autavia is made up of "automobile" and "aviation." This is because the watch was used in dashboard instruments in racing cars and airplanes in the years from 1933 to 1957. Jack Heuer transferred the specifications for the dashboard display i.e. the instruments' intuitive readability from every angle to the watch. An avid supporter and official timekeeper of the Sebring 12-hour race, Heuer knew exactly what the TAG Heuer Autavia should be – a large watch with an easy-to-read dial encased in a shock-resistant case tough enough to withstand the extreme conditions of the race track. The TAG Heuer Autavia was produced according to these specifications right up until 1982.

Today's line of Autavia models combine the style-forming aesthetics of that golden era with the technical achievements of today. The new edition of the Heuer Heritage Calibre Heuer 02 Chronograph, which was presented on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Autavia, is a masterful tribute of the simple yet dynamic personality of the former Autavia watches. The large black dial with three silver-colored counters, like that on the first Autavia model, gives the watch a tasteful vintage aesthetic and means that the watch can be read intuitively. On the other hand, the Heuer-02 automatic manufacture caliber with its column-wheel mechanism and vertical clutch, both of which serve as mechanical motors, is state-of-the-art. With just one barrel, this chronometer-certified movement builds up a power reserve of around 80 hours.
